Bra History

As a design-researcher and bra historian, I examine the bra's history through patent archives, interrogating inventors usage of creativity and materials to develop novelty inventions. By placing the bra and its design as my focus, I am able to inspect the functional desires and analyse the intentions behind the inventions.

Below, in order by year, are a few patents from my developed database, showcasing the bras' development through inventors illustrations. There are a mix of familiar ones, but many are unfamiliar. One of my reasons in doing this is to share the creativity that doesn't always make it in fashion history books but also to clarify one of my pet peeves, which is the bra was NOT invented in 1914. The images are noted with the year, inventor, article name, and a tiny bit of information.

I do hope this can be a source of inspiration for those interested. If you want to learn more about how the bra's history can inform product innovation, get in contact with us.
